Combat Mechanics D&D 5e combat rules

Term Description
Initiative Rolled at combat start (1d20 + DEX modifier). Determines turn order.
Action Your main action each turn: Attack, Cast Spell, Dash, Dodge, Help, Hide, or Disengage.
Bonus Action Quick action if your class or spell allows (e.g., offhand attack, Cunning Action).
Reaction Triggered response outside your turn (e.g., Opportunity Attack, Shield spell).
Movement Move up to your speed each turn. Can split before/after actions.
Conditions Status effects like Poisoned, Stunned, Prone, Frightened, or Concentrating.
Death Saves At 0 HP, roll d20 each turn. 10+ = success, <10 = failure. 3 of either ends it.
Advantage Roll 2d20 and take the higher result. Given by flanking, surprise, etc.
Disadvantage Roll 2d20 and take the lower result. From being blinded, restrained, etc.
Concentration Some spells require focus. Taking damage forces a CON save to maintain.
